Got a note from Becki Day that last Saturday really was busy (she’s at Vinny’s as well as San Juan Events); and I heard that former islander Anna Gordon’s getting married here this coming weekend: Hi Ian, Saw your note on the weddings this last weekend. Vinny’s catered and coordinated 4 fine rehearsal dinner &  Continue Reading

Just got this note from IIMC administrative assistant Rebekah Deitz: Dr. Allen Johnson will be leaving Interisland Medical center as of September 19, 2009. He has decided to pursue a new position working in a hospital environment locally. This position will allow him to continue living on the island and will give him more flexibility  Continue Reading

San Juan County Fair opens today….

Written on August 12, 2009 at 5:49 am, by

I know you’re going to the Fair….I believe I haven’t run into anybody in the past couple of weeks who isn’t. It’s what we do. It’s part of belonging to the tribe. It’s a rite of passage, even if you’re already in. One of the fun things (well, actually, THE fun thing) about hanging around  Continue Reading

Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in  Continue Reading

Gorillas in the mist, that you missed…

Written on August 10, 2009 at 3:19 pm, by

After I ran that bit about the garden behind Island Studios last week, I was surprised to see a guest in the garden last Thursday, reading Sports Illustrated (I didn’t check to see if it was the swimsuit edition). Claudia says all kinds of folks were posing with him & offering drinks from the Sweet  Continue Reading

Yesterday I was out taking photos of town & saw this half-drunk coffee cup at The Naked Bean and loved the design….

Early version of "I'm Yours"….

Written on August 10, 2009 at 8:12 am, by

This may be the most-played song of the year – seems I hear it everywhere, but I’m guessing you’ll have it going the rest of the day in your head if you watch the video…watch out. It’s Jason Mraz with his song “I’m Yours.”

You already know Kestrel Bailey whose folks Shannon & Bill run the Catalyst II between here & Alaska. …well, you’ll recognize the other Kestrel (right) who used to work at Mi Casita & Camp Eagle Rock. She’s back on-island this summer working with San Juan Excursions, making us the island with the most Kestrels per  Continue Reading

San Juan Island in the travel blogs…

Written on August 10, 2009 at 7:46 am, by

I love to read what people think about the island (mostly ’cause they usually say nice things), and Sandy & Tyler are no exception – they brought their girl Stella to the island & stayed & swam at Lakedale, and took the picture of Stella’s quiet time in the tent. Here’s more.

Lotta weddings this past weekend…

Our little island is pretty famous as a place to get married, and this weekend kinda showed it -  there was a big one out at Roche Harbor (Becker the Wedding Photographer posted a really cool photo from that…click here.) Locally, longtime islanders Steve & Nancy Raichlen celebrated their doughter Holly’s wedding to Ryan Wehner,  Continue Reading

In his remarks that came with this picture from yesterday, Jim Maya says the Superpod (J, K, and L pods) got together last night and is slowly moving north this morning, just north of San Juan Island.

Visitors to the island come to see plays, too….

Written on August 7, 2009 at 7:20 am, by

It was cool to see island visitors posing with the sign & director Helen Machin-Smith before As You Like It last night at the Roche Harbor stage, wanting to get their photos taken. The show continues this weekend, tonight, Saturday & Sunday.

Getting away for the play…

Aaron King does a super job (I think) of picking just the right movies for our little two-screen movie theater in town…the Palace Theatre has GI Joe: The Rise of Cobra starting tonight, along with Ice Age 3 and holdover The Ugly Truth. But it’s not all movies…he went to see Island Stage Left’s As  Continue Reading

You’ve seen ‘em before when you roll down Roche Harbor Road – they’re usually dressed up one way or another & causing traffic to slow down just a little to check them out. So, on the way to Roche Harbor last night Update wildlife photographer Josie captured them in action, just for you.
