Roger and the steering committee invite you to come:

The San Juan Island Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union of Washington is pleased to present a free, public forum entitled, “Freedom and Safety: Civil Liberties and Homeland Security”.  The educational forum will be held at the Friday Harbor Middle School on Thursday evening, November 12, from 7 to 9 p.m.  The participants will include Mr. Harry Williams, a Staff Attorney with the ACLU of Washington, and two officers with the United States Customs and Border Protection; Mr. Barry Clement, Friday Harbor Port Director, CBP Office of Field Operations and Mr. Michael Luna, Assistant Chief Patrol Agent-Blaine, CBP Office of Border Patrol.

The mission of the ACLU is to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in the United States by the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.  The San Juan Island Chapter of the ACLU of Washington supports this mission by providing current information and education to the community about the United States Constitution and the Bill of Rights and to enlist public support for their protection and preservation.  The Customs and Border Protections is one of the United States Department of Homeland Security’s largest and most complex components, with a priority mission of keeping terrorists and their weapons out of the United States.  The agency also has a responsibility for securing and facilitating trade and travel while enforcing hundreds of U.S. regulations, including immigration and drug laws.

The purpose of this educational forum is to address and discuss the missions of the two organizations and to promote the belief that civil liberties and homeland security are not in  conflict.  After a break for refreshments, the speaker’s presentations will be followed by a question an answer “town hall” discussion with the audience.  We encourage you to attend the forum and to bring your concerns and questions to the event.
