Peggy Long just told me that her mom just passed away at the Convalescent Center – I’m glad she’s sharing this with all of us, and best wishes & sympathy to you, Peggy in this difficult time. Here’s more:

Jule E. McElvain (August 19, 1928 – January 17, 2010), of Friday Harbor, Washington passed away peacefully, January 17, 2010 at the age of 81. She passed at the Island Convalescents Center in Friday Harbor with her daughter Peggy at her side.

Jule was born on August 19, 1928, in New Salem, North Dakota, to Lester and Ada Belle Mumby. Jule graduated from nursing school in Bismarck, North Dakota.  She met Everet “Bud” McElvain in 1947.  They were married and moved to Renton, Washington.

She was employed at the Renton hospital and also worked for a general practitioner as an RN.  She and Bud enjoyed camping and traveling with their children.  Jule was active in PTA and Campfire Girls.  Jule also enjoyed sewing, needlework and jigsaw puzzles.  After retiring in 1990, Jule enjoyed traveling.  She traveled to Ireland, China, Hawaii and Australia.  She also enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren.

Jule was also very active in her church, First Presbyterian Church of Renton, serving as one of the church’s first woman elders.

She is preceded in death by her husband Everet, father Lester and mother Ada Belle.

Jule leaves her daughter Peggy Long and son-in-law Kurt Long of Friday Harbor, her daughter Jeanne McElvain of Renton, and her son Timothy McElvain of Bothell.   Other survivors include grandchildren Brandon Long of Santa Monica, CA, Michael Long of Seattle, WA, and Katherine McElvain of Bothell, WA.  She is also survived by her sister Joyce MacBeth of Willow, AK and brother James Mumby of Renton.    A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at First Presbyterian Church of Renton.
Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel & Crematory, Inc., Anacortes, WA and the San Juan Islands.
