Share the road!

It’s coming up next month – here’s the deal from our Trails Committee & Island Rec:

“Share the Road” bicycle celebration!
A community event on
San Juan Island, May 15

The San Juan Island Trails Committee invites all residents and visitors to join us for the first ever “Share the Road” community bicycle celebration on San Juan Island Saturday May 15.   ‘Share the Roadʼ will begin with a bicycle parade through town, followed by a short celebration and then an island bike ride. All events begin at the San Juan County Fairgrounds with registration opening at 10:30 a.m.

Families, teens and adults are invited to participate in the parade, celebration and bike ride. Scheduled in conjunction with National Bike Month, our goal is to create a community bicycle event that will increase awareness, emphasize safety, and reinforce the responsibility of both motorized vehicles and bicycles in sharing the road. Educational materials, signage and demonstration will be provided to insure that all understand the “Share the Road” concept.

Come and register early for this free event.  All riders 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult, bikes should be in working order, and use of a helmet is required while cycling.  A limited number of helmets will be available at the ride. The parade will begin at 12:00 noon with refreshments at the fairgrounds afterwards.

The celebration will conclude at about 1:15, at which time we will embark on a community bike ride where, as a large group, we will demonstrate how to responsibly share the road. Those who participate in this longer ride will have the choice of turning around at the American Camp visitor center (10 miles round-trip) or continuing to the Cattle Point Interpretive Center (16 miles round-trip) before returning to the fairgrounds.

This Island Rec event is being organized by the Bike Paths Group of the Trails Committee. More information is available on the Trails Committee web site .

Ride your bikes and bring the whole family to join in the ‘Share the Road’ celebration!
