The Marathon…this week on San Juan Island!

Posted May 31, 2011 at 8:28 am by

And they're off! The race starts & ends in front of the Fairgrounds on Argyle Street at 8:30am. It was fun to get up & see the start of the race & cheer folks on....

It’s the ninth running of the race (the first was 2003!), and it just gets better every year. I love the way this event brings so many people to enjoy the island…here’s more from Clark Gilbert:

Kings Market San Juan Island Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K
to be held on Sunday, June 5

Support your runner! These girls were cheering for mom as she comes around Bailer Hill Road onto Douglas Road...

They are San Juan Island’s premier running events: the Marathon (26.2 miles), the Half Marathon (13.1 miles) and a newly added 10K (6.2 miles). This year’s races will be held on Sunday, June 5. All three races start at 8:30 am, with all runners being off the course by 2:00 pm. All events will start and finish at the San Juan Country Fairgrounds.

We would like to thank all those who have helped in developing and producing these events, which has earned the “most scenic” nod from Northwest Runner magazine. A big thank you to Kings Market for being our presenting sponsor!

If you're out driving on the island Sunday, watch for runners!

Course and Traffic Information: The Marathon and Half Marathon starts at San Juan County Fairgrounds and heads out San Juan Valley Road until Wold. Runners will follow Wold until Bailer Hill and Half Marathoners will follow Bailer Hill to Douglas, then little and on to Cattle Point. Then Half Marathoners will turn right on Argyle and continue up the Argyle hill until the finish at San Juan County Fairgrounds. Marathoners will turn right on Bailer Road and run to Lime Kiln State Park, turn around, and continue back to town the same way as the Half Marathoners. Upon reaching Friday Harbor, Marathoners will continue around the Turn Point and Pear Point Loops before finishing at the Fairgrounds. Complete course descriptions can be found at www.sjmarathon.org

10K runners will, from the Fairgrounds, run the Turn Point and Pear Point Loop arriving back to the Fairgrounds and the finish.

Volunteers are needed to help as aid stations handlers, course directors and finish line helpers. If interested please call San Juan Fitness at 378-4449 and leave your name for Kerry.

We encourage all Sunday morning drivers to be very cautious and aware as they encounter runners on these public roads. Please give them the right away and when passing runners, pass with care.
