Teachers Alice (left) and Conrad keep things exciting with the STAR program & their kids....

It’s great to hear that Island Rec’safter-school program is off to a good start. STAR began in September at the elementary school as the successor to the ASK program, and it’s continuing to grow & improve. Here’s more from Island Rec’s Sally Thomsen:

Halloween was fun!

Island Rec is excited to announce expanded hours and new discounted fees for Island Rec’s daily after school care program, Study Time and Afternoon Recreation (STAR). STAR is an enriched daily after school care program for youth in grades K-6th held at Friday Harbor Elementary school.

Beginning in January:

STAR will now be open on school holidays beginning on January 16, the public holiday observing Martin Luther King. STAR will be open from 8am-6pm.

• Early dismissal fees have been reduced from $26 a day to $21.
• A 20% additional sibling discount is now offered.
• Parents can now have their kids drop into the program rather than pre-registering; Island Rec will invoice parents at the end of the month.

Island Rec has been operating STAR since early September 2011 and although there has seen a steady increase in enrollment, it has not yet reached capacity. “As the word gets out that this an Island Rec program and the kids are having fun, the more it attracts new families.”

Two qualified staff develops and implements a well rounded program that includes a variety of games and activities that focus on developing social and recreation skills along with snack, free time, study time and home work assistance.

In addition to Island Rec STAR is supported by San Juan Island School District and San Juan Island Prevention Coalition.

Contact Island Rec at 378-4953 or www.islandrec.orgto apply for STAR.
