Katie Fleming over at the Friends of the San Juans wanted me to pass along this invitation to attend their “Last Chance Coal Comment Party” for the Gateway Pacific Terminal:

The San Juan Islands and the Salish Sea will be at the center of the marine impacts resulting from increased shipping of coal exports. Concerned citizens will have the opportunity to comment on the proposed project until January 21, 2013.

FRIENDS of the San Juans and the San Juan NO COALition are hosting a comment writing party on Thursday January 17 from 5-7 p.m. at the San Juan Grange in Friday Harbor (152 1st St.). Materials and resources to help guide participants through the letter writing process will be available. Attendees are encouraged to bring a something to write with and/or a laptop. Refreshments will be provided.

Comments made during the scoping period will help inform the type and the geographic scope of impacts to be included in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS). The EIS is the key document for the various agencies and individuals involved with approving or denying permits, permissions and/or leases for the project.

“11,000 comments have been submitted to the co-lead agencies so far – an unprecedented number for a scoping process. This is our final push to continue to get our voices heard in San Juan County. Join your community, submit your final comments and celebrate a successful public input process at the gathering on January 17th,” said Katie Fleming, Community Engagement Director at FRIENDS of the San Juans.

For more information visit www.sanjuans.org or contact Katie Fleming at 360.378.2319 or [email protected]. Comments can be submitted here until January 21: http://www.eisgatewaypacificwa.gov/get-involved/comment
