Ron Puetz opened Ron’s Island Meats for retail sales about 2 weeks ago, out there on Madden Lane where Jim Scribner’s shop was. In fact, Ron bought the business from Jim last August, but has only now opened the retail side of things. He started off right with a nice big order of 65 steaks for one of the local boating clubs.

So far, he offers New York Steaks, Rib Eye Steaks, Sausages, Franks and Burger Patties (with bacon ground in, mmmmm!) and either Smoked or Honey Cured Bacon. Oh, and Dog Bones – don’t forget the dog bones! Soon this list will expand to include Chicken, Pork and some other specialty smoked products.

He also does custom butchering so if you have something you need cut up, he can help you out. Over the last 5 – 6 years he has learned his trade from Jim Scribner who Ron says is a “great trainer – very particular about his cuts” rather than being focused on production and not necessarily on quality.

Ron moved to the island from the Seattle area in late 1999, after he came here several times for construction jobs – he had been doing custom sheet metal fabrication and metal roofing. He saw the meat business as a great opportunity to get out of construction. “I got tired of falling off roofs” he says, “even though it’s not really the fall that hurts, it’s the sudden stop at the bottom”.

Here’s some bacon that’s just ready to come out of the smoker. You don’t get much closer to the source than this! You can see more information and what all he has available daily on his Facebook page, or if you’re not on Facebook, give him a call at (360) 472-1325 or email him at
