This story has been updated since it was first published: (see below)
Have you seen those new structures the Port put up down at Spring Street Landing where Downriggers was? They’re called Story Poles, and they simulate the size and shape of the new building which is proposed to be built in Downriggers’ place. They will be up for about 2 weeks.

Also at the site, hanging on the fence is a photograph of the harbor with a detailed artist’s rendering of what the finished building will look like. (See below.) Many people spoke out against the first design with the wide, flat roof, and space-age looks. “This is Friday Harbor, not Bellevue” was a common gripe about it. The new design here is more in keeping with the historical look of buildings from the town’s past.

Update: The Town Council will hold a Public Hearing to review the Shoreline Substantial Development Permit application which was submitted by the Port of Friday Harbor in order to proceed with construction of a building to replace the one that burned last August. This public hearing will take place on Thursday, June 26th at 5:30 pm at Brickworks, 150 Nichols Street. Additional information about the proposal is available for public review online at www.fridayharbor.org, or by request by contacting Mike Bertrand at the Town’s Community Development Department.

  1. I believe the height of this building is totally inappropriate for the shoreline. From the Tops’l Seafood Bar (above the Cask and Schooner) you still cannot see over the roofline of the proposed building. Please reconsider design number one.

  3. The proposed new building height is 15 feet taller than the previous existing structure. The original proposal at least left somewhat the same view corridor for surrounding businesses.
Lets review this again before taking this to Town Council for approval!
Have your say at the Port Commission Meeting June 25th at 4pm… and The Shoreline approval meeting at Brickworks June 26th!

  4. Looks good to me. Good for the port folks for trying to do something with character. I feel it is good to have buildings that have distinctive style in focal points in the town. The pitched roof is more characteristic of old Friday Harbor than flat roofs. The proposed design provides some new public view areas.
