You know Brady Ryan, right? From San Juan Island Sea Salt. Well his girlfriend, Leah Wymer has started a new cut flower business here on the island called Bloom San Juan. It’s about 1 acre this year, and will be 2 or 3 next year. She sells at the Farmer’s Market, does weddings, has a regular flower delivery program (a flower CSA), and does arrangements for businesses in town. Here’s more from Leah, in her own words…

Bloom San Juan is a new business, which I started in 2013 at Ryan Farm in San Juan Valley. Ryan Farm is also home to Brady Ryan’s businesses, San Juan Island Sea Salt and San Juan Island Honey. I became interested in flowers after working at a vegetable farm in the Snoqualmie Valley for two years. That is where I met Brady, who was also farming there at the time, and we decided that it was time to pursue our own dreams on San Juan Island.

I grow an acre of cut flowers, most of which are annuals. I have been selling to a handful of places around the island, including the Saturday Farmer’s Market and various businesses and bed and breakfasts around town. I also do a monthly flower delivery to homes and offices within the greater Seattle area. This involves catching the red eye on the second Tuesday of every month (May-October) and hand delivering island grown bouquets to all of my monthly subscribers.

I also do wedding flowers! I can provide buckets of bulk flowers for brides, or I can also do full service weddings. That includes bridal bouquets, bridemaids bouquets, bouttonieres, corsages, arbors, center pieces, large table arrangements, flower girl flowers, etc., etc. Although I like to stay on island for weddings, I have also provided flowers for a few couples off island this year. It’s always fun to see new towns and venues.

People can also purchase a one time bouquet on my website, bloomsanjuan.com. This is fun because people that live off island can order bouquets for their loved ones in Friday Harbor. The flowers are planted, picked and delivered by yours truly. I also keep a blog on the website, where people can keep up with what’s happening at the farm.

The farm has been really hard work, but extremely gratifying. I am incredibly grateful to Cal and Mary Karen Ryan (owners of Ryan Farm) for letting Brady and I live out our farming dreams on their property. They have been our biggest supporters the whole time!
