The fastest-selling production in London’s Young Vic Theatre’s history, Tennessee Williams’ timeless masterpiece A Streetcar Named Desire, will be shown in HD at San Juan Community Theatre on Monday, September 29 at 7:00 p.m.

The National Theatre Live screening, recorded earlier this month, features Gillian Anderson (The X-Files, The Fall) as Blanche DuBois, Ben Foster (Lone Survivor, Kill Your Darlings) as Stanley and Vanessa Kirby (BBC’s Great Expectations, Three Sisters at the Young Vic) as Stella.

As Blanche’s fragile world crumbles, she turns to her sister Stella for solace – but her downward spiral brings her face to face with the brutal, unforgiving Stanley Kowalski. Visionary director Benedict Andrews returns to the Young Vic following his Critics’ Circle Award-winning Three Sisters.

Tickets for the screening are $20 for adults, $18 for SJCT members and $10 for student reserved. The SJCT box office (378-3210) is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are also available on-line at www.sjctheatre.org.

In addition to National Theatre Live presentations, San Juan Community Theatre also presents operas via The Met: Live in HD and starting in December, will present ballets from Bolshoi Ballet Only in Cinemas. The HD programs were made possible through a generous bequest from the late Dodie Gann and underwriting from The McGee Foundation. A complete schedule of the HD-live events is available at www.sjctheatre.org.

  1. Disappointed that SJCT is not that much of a Community Theatre anymore. It seems that most of the events are “television” shows in HD on the big screen available from Netflix or on PBS. I would make special trip to the island to see a real live production of “Streetcar” on the main stage. I can’t believe people will actually pay high ticket prices for the HD programs that they can watch at home. As fond as I have been of the theatre, having worked there and performed in many state productions, I can’t be fond of this new direction.
