Lots of people attended the grand opening of Island Museum of Art’s new building with their opening show “Unveiling”. It was standing room only for a good part of the evening with people enjoying each other’s company while surrounded by beautiful works of art – paintings, sculpture, carvings and pottery. 1. Am I the only one who thinks this building is totally out of place in quaint Friday Harbor. it sticks out like a sore thumb.

  2. No, Greg, you are not the only one who feels this way…

  3. I think that we have to consider that this started as the EMS building, and the building addresses the important functions: reconizability, identifiable entrance, gallery space, etc. It still has a reasonable footprint and height profile. From this vantage, it is successful and deserves KUDOS!

The bottom line for me is: what a wonderfull feat for a small group of people from a small town on this island to conjure up and build this for the community and visitors to enjoy!

  5. While I agree that the building doesn’t necessarily fit in with the architectural style of Friday Harbor, a lot of work has gone into it, and I applaud IMA for their enthusiasm. I’m tired of hearing of the “quaintness” of Friday Harbor; it’s nothing more than an affectation–the town hasn’t been “quaint” for about 30 years now.
