Unique Literature Class Offered At The San Juan Center Of Skagit Valley College. Wandering Among Mountains and River:  Landscape In East Asian Literature.

Join class leader, Catherine Barnhart, in this six week community education course exploring the theme of landscape in the literature of China, Japan and Korea and drawing connections with the mountain landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.

Readings are in English translation. Images of Asian landscape paintings provide a visual context for literary selections. An introduction to some fundamental elements of the original languages enhances understanding of our readings and of the relationships among literature, art and nature. For comparative purposes, we also read poetry and essays by Pacific Northwest writers. Oral and written reflections on readings and images form a key component of class sessions.

Catherine Barnhart received her BA in Chinese language from the University of Washington and her PhD in Chinese literature from Stanford University. She has taught at Middlebury College, Western Washington University, Yale University, Skagit Valley College, Annie Wright School and Spring Street International School. She has lived in Taiwan, Korea, China and Japan, and has led educational tours to China and Southeast Asia. She and her husband, Richard, have made their home on San Juan Island for over twelve years.

Class Meets for six weeks: T/TH February 3rd thru March 12th, 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.

Please call Skagit Valley College for registration details. (360) 378-3220
