In recognition of International Women’s Day on March 8, we salute the long history of the Women’s Study Club, active on the island for 95 years.

Prior to disbanding in 2008, its members’ dedication to community service and lifelong learning contributed much to a growing town – and inspired countless future civic leaders, male and female.

One such dedicated member was Florence Guard Douglas, pictured here, who was president of the club in 1936. We know from her daughter Jackie Hubbard (90 years young now) that Florence loved her role in the club and its varied educational programs. Here’s to you, Women’s Study Club and past members! If your family has a photo of a club member to share, please contact the San Juan Historical Museum.

You can support the San Juan Update by doing business with our loyal advertisers, and by making a one-time contribution or a recurring donation.

  1. Thanks for posting this photo of my grandma, Tim! I wish I had known her, but alas she died before I was born. She lived a good life, though! What Friday Harbor Girl doesn’t? Thanks again! We love History! Here’s the link to the San Juan Historical Museum: http://sjmuseum.org

  2. Hello San Juan Historical Museum, When I lived on the Island from 1950 to 1953 the best history was shared at the monthly Canasta gatherings at grandma Groll’s Parlor on Tucker before Larson. I attended the second and third grades at the local school and belonged to the Christian Science church. My mother and I married into the Groll family when she and Lindsey G. found each other at a after-hours club in Seattle, my mother was waiting tables after her shift at the Lotus Cafe on First St., she was a single mom and a hard worker. I will be on the Island this summer please let me know if you have any further desire to hear my stories of the Island during this time, when the rabbits were ruling the land. Sincerely, R.

  3. Thanks for your comments, Robert. I’m on the Museum board and would love to hear some of your stories when you visit the island this summer. I will be volunteering there each week and can be reached by contacting the Museum via email or phone. http://sjmuseum.org/ Speaking of rabbits, I think you’ll like our April story for the San Juan Update. Our history tidbits are published the first Wednesday of each month. Thanks for reading them!
