Do you have some free time, love animals and have an interest in making a difference in your community? If the answer is yes, then the Animal Shelter is the place for you!

The Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor is always in need of caring folks for a wide variety of tasks. Whether you’d like to walk dogs, greet visitors, spend time with cats or help out at a fundraising event there are many ways you can make a big difference in the life of homeless animals.

Here are just a few of the benefits of volunteering:

  1. Be part of the solution. You’ll join a network of hundreds of thousands of people worldwide, working to make the world safer and more humane for animals. You’ll make the jobs of everyone working for animals a little easier by lending a hand and spreading the message of responsible pet ownership and animal protection.
  2. Get warm fuzzies. You’ll never find a more grateful and accepting friend than an animal you’ve been kind to.
  3. Keep good company. You’ll make lots of new friends—and not just the four-legged kind. Working side by side with people who share similar interests can forge lifelong friendships.
  4. Meet the new you. You’ll discover skills you never knew you had, and you may be surprised at what you’re capable of achieving.
  5. Gain a new career. You’ll learn things that may lead you to the career—or career change—of your dreams. Employers and college admissions officers look favorably on time spent in volunteer service.
  6. Enjoy a wagging tail, a purr, and a smile. Whoever said, “The best things in life are free” must have volunteered at an animal shelter!

If this sounds good to you, stop by the animal shelter, located at 111 Shelter Road and fill out a volunteer application. You can volunteer in two different ways – as a regular, weekly volunteer committing to two or three hours on a specific day or days each week, or as a drop-in volunteer, stopping in when your schedule permits. Either way, the staff at the animal shelter, the shelter board of directors, and most of all, the animals will be so grateful!

You can support the San Juan Update by doing business with our loyal advertisers, and by making a one-time contribution or a recurring donation.
