August Primary

Election-2015The filing period for the off-year election ended Friday, except that if no one signed up for a particular office there will be an extended three-day filing this week. We vote in odd-numbered years for the smaller, more local offices — and in even-numbered years for county, state, and national offices.

There will be a primary election in August on San Juan Island, it appears, for just one race. The only seat for which three candidates have filed is  #2 on the San Juan Island Public Hospital District #1.

Barbara Sharp, Michelle Loftus, and Daniel Miller filed for the seat. One will be eliminated in the August 4 primary, and two will continue to the November 3 general election.

The other two hospital district seats have two candidates each: Monica Harrington and Jenny Ledford for seat #3, and Bill Williams and William E. Hancock for seat #5. They will not face off until November.

For three seats on the San Juan Island School District No. 149 board, four candidates have filed: Ralph Hahn for #3, John Kurtz and Peter Lane for #4, and Jack McKenna for #5. There will be no primary in these races.

Town of Friday Harbor candidates include — all unopposed — Kelle’ Wilson for treasurer, Steve Hushebeck for seat #1 on the Town Council, Noel T. Monin for seat #2, and Barbara Starr for seat #5.

Island Rec candidates are Bill Cumming for seat #1 and Adam Eltinge for seat #4.

For San Juan Fire Protection District #3 Robert Low and Chris Laws have filed for seat #2. They will meet in November.

Greg Hertel is running unopposed for seat #3 on the Port of Friday Harbor commission. Steve Dubail has filed unopposed for seat #2 on San Juan County Cemetery District #1. Barbara L. Miller is running unopposed for Water Commissioner 2 on the Cape San Juan Water District.
