Affect / Effect
One hundred of San Juan Island’s most impassioned TEDx enthusiasts will come together on Saturday, September 19, 2015 from 10am-4pm for a day of networking and dialogue around the theme Affect / Effect. The event will take place in the Friday Harbor Middle School Auditorium on Blair Street.

The conference is built on the model and under license from the TED Conference, an annual gathering of some of the world’s most fascinating and influential people. This local event will encourage attendees to celebrate remarkable ideas of all kinds. The program will feature short talks, music and conversation breaks where audience members and speakers will enjoy the opportunity to network and exchange ideas. In addition to internationally recognized presenters, the day will also feature island residents with ideas worth sharing.

TEDxSanJuanIsland is designed as a platform for ideas, where local individuals share the day with world-class speakers and thought leaders,” said Gary Franklin, curator of TEDxSanJuanIsland and member of the organizing committee. “The annual TED Conference stands out as a confluence of fascinating concepts and we are excited to bring this local event to our island.

The combination of a diverse group of speakers and high calibre artistic performers will engage attendees throughout the day. The event will celebrate the gift of the imagination; like a Cirque du Soleil of ideas! By recording the presentations, our island community will share our passions and perceptions on a global scale.

The independently produced event, operated under a license from TED, is organized by community volunteers and is aimed at creating dialogue as well as giving people a forum to share their passions, ideas and experiences. The event is sponsored, to date, by SEE Media Group and Windermere Real Estate – San Juan Island.

About TEDx, x = independently organized event
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED
TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading, usually in the form of short, powerful talks (18 minutes or fewer) delivered by today’s leading thinkers and doers. Many of these talks are given at TED’s annual conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, and made available, free, on TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

TED’s open and free initiatives for spreading ideas include TED.com, where new TED Talk videos are posted daily; the Open Translation Project, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from thousands of volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed; the annual million-dollar TED Prize, which funds exceptional individuals with a “wish,” or idea, to create change in the world; TEDx, which provides licenses to thousands of individuals and groups who host local, self-organized TED-style events around the world; and the TED Fellows program, which selects innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.
