This hands-on free activity is jointly conducted by the park, the San Juan County Land Bank, The San Juan Trails Committee and the Bureau of land Management. The workshop will meet at the English Camp parking lot and then vanpool to Mitchell Hill where participants will have the opportunity to work on two different trail projects.

Space is limited to 25 participants. To reserve a place, call David Harsh, park maintenance worker at (360) 378-2240, ext. 2232, or education specialist Raena Parsons at ext. 2222. Please R.S.V.P. by Friday September 25.

The BLM’s Nick Teague will lead the educational / inspirational portion of the Workshop: The Art and Philosophy of Hand Tool Trail Maintenance.

Additionally the program will include:

  • Sustainable Trails: Preserving the Tread – keeping water off and users on.
  • Impacts on Trails – Natural Forces / Multiple Use Groups.
  • Multiple Use Trail Standards: Awareness of differing user group experiences.
  • Multiple Use Trail courtesies: Yielding Right of Way and choke points.
  • Forum for Mitchell Hill user groups.
  • Response about signage. Suggestions for tweaks to the trail signs or trail system.
  • Prioritizing problem areas and brainstorming solutions.
  • Programming trail alteration projects.

We will be learning about maintaining sustainable trails within the historical park,” Harsh said. “We’ll also address natural impacts, how to cope with multiple uses, conversion of old logging roads and causeway construction.

Those completing the workshop will be eligible to sign up to become stewards of hiking, biking and horse riding trails as an official NPS volunteer.
