SJI School District Superintendent Danna Diaz shares this letter to the community…

Friday Harbor Elementary School receives the Washington Achievement Award

Spring is here and we are having beautiful weather in Friday Harbor. Students and teachers are back from spring break and we are busy teaching and learning.

On April 7, we received news that Friday Harbor Elementary is receiving the 2015 Washington Achievement Award. According to Randy Dorn, State Superintendent of Public Instruction and Isabel Muñoz-Colón, Chair, State Board of Education, the Washington Achievement Award winners are selected using the State Board of Education Revised Achievement Index and are based on statewide assessment data for the three previous years.

The award is given in seven categories: Overall Excellence, High Progress, English Language Arts Growth, Math Growth, Extended Graduation Rate, English Language Acquisition, and Achievement Gap. Friday Harbor Elementary is being recognized for High Progress. Congratulations Principal Dane Ball, teachers, staff, students and families!

On April 28, The Northwest Education Service District (NWESD) 189 will hold an awards banquet where districts will present awards in several categories. Our district will present the Community Leadership Award to the San Juan Community Theatre (SJCT) for their contributions toward education. Thank you SJCT for your continued support to our students and families.

Last month, we facilitated strategic planning sessions where over 100 stakeholders participated. I would like to thank you for taking time out of your busy day to meet with our facilitator. Our school board will meet May 5th to review data and create goals for our district. We are excited to move our district from good to great!

Most importantly, Teacher Appreciation Week will be celebrated May 2-6. Please help us recognize our teachers for their dedication and commitment to our students and families. We appreciate you!
