Former SJIEMS Chief Jerry Martin Cleared by Department of Health

Posted February 21, 2020 at 5:47 am by

From the SJC Public Hospital District No. 1…

Former SJI EMS Chief Jerry Martin

Former San Juan Island EMS (SJIEMS) Chief Jerry Martin served from January 2016 to April 2019. At the end of 2018, the Washington State Department of Health (DOH) began an investigation in response to three complaints that he was not compliant with continuing education requirements.

We have now received word that the DOH, on January 25, 2020, has completed their investigation of the case “without disciplinary action because the evidence does not support a violation.”

In a response to a controversy at the time, the governing Board, San Juan County Public Hospital District No. 1 (SJCPHD #1), funded a brief investigation regarding Chief Jerry Martin. On October 24, 2018, that investigation also cleared Chief Jerry Martin, and the Board voted to conclude its review of the complaint.

We thank Chief Jerry Martin for his service and wish him all the best.

The Presidential Primary

Posted February 19, 2020 at 9:01 am by

Just when you thought the election was over, you get another ballot. Yes, folks, this year the Presidential Primary is following close on the heels of the February special election.

The purpose of the Presidential Primary is to give the voters a chance to tell the two major parties who to select as their candidates. The nominees selected by the two big parties – as well as the candidates selected by other parties – will then appear on the November general election ballot.

A significant change in state law this past year moved the Presidential Primary from May to March. With a May primary, Washington had one of the latest primaries in the country. By the time Washingtonians voted, the race was often all but over. For that reason, candidates had little incentive to visit Washington or to court Washington voters. The idea behind the date change is that if Washington’s primary occurs earlier, the presidential candidates will pay more attention to Washington. Continue Reading

League of Women Voters Celebrates 100 Year Mark

Posted February 18, 2020 at 5:48 am by

The League of Women Voters of the San Juans held a Centennial Celebration on February 12, to mark the 100th anniversary of the founding of the national League on February 14, 1920 by Carrie Chapman Catt to help women become informed voters.

The occasion also marked that 2020 will be 100 years since women won the right to vote. League members, elected officials and candidates past and present, and a wide variety of community members attended the event at the Mullis Center.

President Barbara Sharp welcomed the guests and offered some history. The Suffragist movement, launched in 1848 by Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, struggled for decades. Activists were ridiculed, beaten and jailed. Many did not live to see their dream fulfilled. We stand on the shoulders of these brave women. Continue Reading
