“Omnium Gatherum” (a gathering of all) is playing from Dec 15th through Christmas Eve at SJC Fairgrounds in the Marie Boe building – Come and celebrate the spirit of the season with us, through storytelling, theatre and song. Join us in our warm, cozy venue for a celebration of the season in what has become known as an island tradition!

This year we hope, once again, to nurture “hygge” – the traditional Danish concept of “coziness of the soul” and the reason that Danes have been rated, for many years, the world’s happiest people. It incorporates the gathering of friends, candlelight, home-spun music, warm drinks, telling stories by the fire and letting go of life’s worries.

We love to share this warm and embracing evening with our community each year. It has become one of our most popular traditions. Come alone, with friends and/or family prepared to laugh, to reminisce and to celebrate!

Performances are at the Marie Boe Building, SJC Fairgrounds
Free admission (Donations appreciated)

  • December 15th & 16th at 7:30
  • December 17th at 4:00
  • December 20th, 21st, 22nd and 23rd at 7:30
  • December 24 (Christmas Eve) at 4:00 and 6:30

Reservations are highly recommended for the two Christmas Eve performances (at 4:00 and 6:30). All other performances are first come, first served. Please email [email protected] with:

  • Number of people
  • Matinee or evening performance

At this time of year especially, we look forward to greeting and entertaining our island community, their friends, families and visitors. Island Stage Left welcomes you all!

Pet of the Week

Bentley is this week’s Pet of the Week – Contributed photo

My name is Bentley and I think you’ll find me interesting company and a wonderful bridge partner. I’m a deep thinker and an existentialist at heart.

In a world of moral ambiguity, I like to spend my days in quiet contemplation of philosophical topics like “What is the meaning of life?” and “What is my greater purpose?” I also wonder when dinner will be served and why I haven’t been adopted yet.

Alas, these are all questions for another day, my friends. For now, I must visit the scratching post and think about something Nietzsche once said. Good day to you.

Paddling With Spirits: A Solo Kayak Journey

Posted December 9, 2017 at 5:59 am by

Join Griffin Bay Bookstore at the San Juan Island Library on December 13th at 7:00 pm for an exciting evening with Lopezian Irene Skyriver when she presents her wonderful book, Paddling With Spirits, the story of her solo kayak trip from Alaska back to the islands.

Inspired partly by her own spirit of adventure, and partly by the stories of her native coastal ancestors, Irene Skyriver celebrated her fortieth year of life with a solo kayak voyage, paddling from Alaska to her home in Washington’s San Juan Islands.

Paddling with Spirits: A Solo Kayak Journey interweaves the true account of her journey with generational stories handed down and vividly re-imagined. Beginning with her great- grandmother’s seduction of an Indian fighter turned trader, and following her ancestors on both sides through oil booms, orphanages, wartime romances, dance halls and cattle ranches, Paddling with Spirits dips like a paddle itself between the stories of those who inspired her, and Irene’s own journey down a lonely coast.

As she encounters harsh weather, wolves, bears, whales, and the wild beauty of the coastal waters, she reflects on her own life and on the lives of the many people she meets along the way, before her final triumphant return home. Paddling with Spirits is a wild, brave, and thrillingly original adventure.

“The interweaving of the past and the present form a complex and beautiful fabric that carries this story beyond that of a simple family history.”Steve Brown, past curator, Seattle Art Museum, Pacific NW Coast Native collection

About the Author

A Washington native, Irene Skyriver was born in Port Townsend and raised in the country. She moved with her children and horses to Lopez Island in the San Juan Islands thirty-eight years ago, where she lived off-the-grid, and as a single parent, spent most of those early years growing a garden, and letting the outdoors and beaches be her family’s sanctuary, inspiration, and teacher.

She organized parades for Earth Days, International Women’s Days, and was one of the early founders and shapers of the Summer and Winter Solstice celebrations, as well as Passage Rites ceremonies for youth. A poet, dancer, and a singer of traditional Earth Circle Songs, writing came later for her, mostly because one has to sit down to do it!

Irene received a full fellowship to Fishtrap Writers Conference, based on a submission from Paddling With Spirits. This was followed by a grant to finish the work. In between involvement in community, her market garden, and milking goats, she plans to sit down and accomplish these new writing endeavors and is at work on her second book, a novel.

County Adds Land to Odlin Park

Posted December 8, 2017 at 5:00 pm by

San Juan County acquires 100 acre Odlin South from WA DNR

After a persistent year-long effort by San Juan County, the Odlin South property sale was approved by the WA Board of Natural Resources on December 5, 2017. Council members Jamie Stephens and Rick Hughes, along with County Manager Mike Thomas, made the trip to Olympia to testify in support of the sale to the County.

The 100-acre Odlin South property will now become a permanent part of the County’s Park system when the County reimburses the State $194,000 for the remaining fair market value of the property in January 2018.  “This valuable addition to our county’s park system creates more places for people to enjoy low-impact recreation while preserving a unique natural environment,” said Jamie Stephens, San Juan County councilmember.

The Odlin South property contains important ecological and wildlife habitat features, including an eagle and osprey nest, and its immediate proximity to the 80 acre Odlin County Park provides potential for easily accessible trails with possible connection to the Fisherman Bay community trail.

Many Lopez residents supported the initiative to save the property from possible development and to gain permanent public ownership by the County. Beginning in 2011, WA DNR entered into a 50 year lease with the County for Odlin South, with management responsibility assigned to the Parks, Recreation and Fair Department. During 2015 and 2017 County Parks and the Parks & Recreation Commission developed the Odlin South Management and Stewardship Plan. Along with gathering resident input, the planning process included an ecological assessment of the property, development of management and stewardship goals and objectives, and an action plan.

The relatively flat topography and mosaic of high quality wetland systems, along with a large aspen grove, old growth trees and large snags, Odlin South has a rich environment for wildlife.

New Ambulance for EMS

Posted December 8, 2017 at 5:51 am by

San Juan Island EMS has just brought home a 2017 gasoline ambulance. You may have seen her making her island rounds gaining new engine miles. This is a huge accomplishment and could not have happened if it were not for a generous donation from long time islander Dodi Gann. A matching gift from the San Juan EMT Association made the purchase possible. With the SJIEMS budget being a hot topic for the last two years, department funding for a much-needed ambulance was not conceivable at the time needed.

The fleet today stands with the oldest ambulance, a 1993 Ford E350/360 (a whopping 24 years old!) being replaced by the purchase. A 1997 Ford E350/360 (20 years old!), a 2001/2002 Ford E350/360 (just a teen at 16 years old) and a used ambulance purchased two and a half years ago, a 2003 Ford E450. Continue Reading

Nordland II

Nordland II – San Juan Ferry & Barge photo

Getting ready to begin their 42nd year of service in the San Juans in 2018, San Juan Ferry & Barge has just added a new vessel, the Nordland II to their fleet.

Kirk Moore with www.WorkBoat.com has the full story below and you can also check out SJ Ferry & Barge’s Facebook Page to see photos of the old Nordland and photos of this new one under construction and conducting sea trials.

Here’s the story by Kirk Moore:
Salish Sea islanders in Washington state have a new ride for their vehicles and heavy equipment deliveries, with the arrival of the landing craft ferry Nordland II. The ferry was built for San Juan Ferry & Barge in Friday Harbor, Wash., on San Juan Island.

The 86’x25’ vessel delivered last week by Latitude Marine Services LLC, La Connor, Wash., features a 75’x23’ cargo deck open at the stern for cargo overhang. A high pilothouse offset to starboard gives Capt. Marty Starr excellent all-around visibility.

Both those features help the Nordland II deliver big cargo with nimble grace in tight quarters. (Continue reading)
