The Scent Keeper & House Lessons: Renovating a Life

Many of you enjoyed Erica Bauermeister’s first visit to San Juan Island for her debut novel, The School Of Essential Ingredients, that went on to become a New York Times bestseller.

July 22, at 7:00 p.m. – via Zoom – she is returning to the San Juan Island Public Library for her recent novel, The Scent Keeper, and her memoir, House Lessons: Renovating a Life.

In association with Griffin Bay and Darvill’s Bookstores, the San Juan Island Library presents a reading of House Lessons: Renovating a Life, the new memoir by New York Times bestselling author Erica Bauermeister, author of the novels The Scent Keeper, The Lost Art of Mixing, and The School of Essential Ingredients.

The House in Port Townsend was dilapidated – to say the least; today it is the happy home for her family after much work.  Using her novelistic skills, Erica threads together a cast of marvelous characters, psychology, and architectural theory. She will share the joys – and pains (mental, financial, psychological, probably others).

Just one of her delightful ruminations occurs near the surprising ending: “The windows were changing position – not much, just a touch in either direction to accommodate the restructuring of a room or two. Roman [the architect] had been adamant that we alter the exterior of the house as little as possible, and thus the windows had tiptoed carefully across the plans, and I’d barely seen the change on the paper.”
