Goodbye Cafe Demeter - Marilyn O'Conner photo

Marilyn O’Conner shares this photo of Jordyn Magnuson (left) and Alex Hayes (right), two of the crew on either side of Pam Stewart, owner of Cafe Demeter, as they hang the “closed” sign on Christmas Eve.

The bakery is closing permanently.  It has been a beloved community gathering place for many years, not just for the excellent pastries and coffee, but also for the warm welcome provided to locals and visitors alike.  They will be greatly missed!

  1. For me personally, this is a devastating loss. It was as close to a hang out in town as I have had. As the article said, fine pastries, very good coffee, and a friendly place to be. Alex and Jordyn were excellent at remembering people and the things they liked. Pam was always helpful at filling special orders. This is a loss to the community — a thriving business, which provided employment to islanders and provided a friendly place to gather.
It will be a long time before this combination of characteristics will be found again. This closure, along with that of the Bistro, run by Richard and Sherri make the winter days just a bit darker.

  2. It was my first trip to the San Juans in 2014 when I discovered this special place and I had to go there again in 2019 just to experience the unique atmosphere of this café in this cute town again. I loved to see how the locals gathered for chats and knitting on a damp November day. I was so sad when I visited Friday Harbor this summer and couldn’t have these delicious cinnamon rolls with the very good coffee any more.

  3. Thank you Marylin for all the great years! I can still smell the aromas coming from your kitchen!
