Mar­i­lyn O’Con­ner shares this pho­to of Jor­dyn Mag­nu­son (left) and Alex Hayes (right), two of the crew on either side of Pam Stew­art, own­er of Cafe Deme­ter, as they hang the “closed” sign on Christ­mas Eve. 

The bak­ery is clos­ing per­ma­nent­ly.  It has been a beloved com­mu­ni­ty gath­er­ing place for many years, not just for the excel­lent pas­tries and cof­fee, but also for the warm wel­come pro­vid­ed to locals and vis­i­tors alike.  They will be great­ly missed!

  1. For me per­son­al­ly, this is a dev­as­tat­ing loss. It was as close to a hang out in town as I have had. As the arti­cle said, fine pas­tries, very good cof­fee, and a friend­ly place to be. Alex and Jor­dyn were excel­lent at remem­ber­ing peo­ple and the things they liked. Pam was always help­ful at fill­ing spe­cial orders. This is a loss to the com­mu­ni­ty — a thriv­ing busi­ness, which pro­vid­ed employ­ment to islanders and pro­vid­ed a friend­ly place to gather.
    It will be a long time before this com­bi­na­tion of char­ac­ter­is­tics will be found again. This clo­sure, along with that of the Bistro, run by Richard and Sher­ri make the win­ter days just a bit darker.

It was my first trip to the San Juans in 2014 when I dis­cov­ered this spe­cial place and I had to go there again in 2019 just to expe­ri­ence the unique atmos­phere of this café in this cute town again. I loved to see how the locals gath­ered for chats and knit­ting on a damp Novem­ber day. I was so sad when I vis­it­ed Fri­day Har­bor this sum­mer and couldn’t have these deli­cious cin­na­mon rolls with the very good cof­fee any more.
