The town funds the program and the 13 chosen applicants (led by our amazing coordinator Jeff VanDerford) went through rigorous training.
This included a kayak trip courtesy Crystal Seas Kayaks, a whale watch trip from Western Prince, a tour and lunch at the Madrona Bar and Grill at Roche Harbor courtesy of Brent Snow, CPR training thanks to Lainie Volk, a safety review from the sheriff's department, a B&B tour, grooming tips from Jennie Ledford and the fundamentals of customer service and how to read a map.
When recommending an activity to visitors, we as a group don't play favorites and choose, say, Western Prince over another whale watch tour. The team consists of Heaven DeLazerda, Riley Eltrich, Stephen Garfield, Angela Gossom, Ron Groseclose, Hudson Hawkins, Brooke Jangard, Flynn McGilvrey, Theo Pratt , Landis Pederson, Alaina Schultz, Ursula Stegman and Mollie Taylor. Various members of the group are positioned in downtown Friday Harbor, at Roche Harbor and on heavily traveled ferries four days a week. Our Ambassadors have received many compliments from both visitors and locals. So far, they're doing pretty well.
