Library to Reopen March 15
The San Juan Island Library will be reopening to the public on Tuesday
March 15, and resuming normal hours of operation. The public will be able
to use library computers and check out books and videos, but construction
will continue for a few more weeks. Portions of the building will be
blocked off, and the library will not have access to all its materials.
Interim library services at Friday Harbor High School will be offered to
the public for the last time
on Tuesday March 8.
Construction and remodeling will be complete in April, at which time the
library will host a Grand Re-opening Celebration. The project has
expanded the librarys shelf space by about 30%, allowing the library to
continue to grow with the growing population of the island.
"The new shelves with all the books on them look terrific,"said Lauren
Stara, the library director. "I think the community should be very happy
with the work done by Westmiller Construction, staying so close to the
schedule in spite of the inevitable, unexpected problems encountered in
any remodel. Being temporarily closed was tough on the public, volunteers
and the staff, but the incredible volunteer effort from the community
helped us tremendously through this period" she added. "The staff at the
high school who helped us offer services two days per week were wonderful.
We also appreciate the help of volunteers who moved books, book cases,
dusted and redusted, and boxed up all the offices. When it is all over,
you'll think it was worth it!"
The Library's collection includes both fiction and non-fiction books for
very young children, for grade-school aged children and for adults. In
addition to its collections of books, audio books, DVDs, videos and
magazines to loan, the library also provides computers for public use.
Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 AM to 6 PM,
Tuesday and Thursday from 10 AM to 8 PM, Saturday from 10 AM to 5 PM and
Sunday from 1 PM to 5 PM. Library cards are free to island residents
with proof of residency.
