It’s Southern, so you know it’s gonna be fun….here’s more from Jan Bollwinkel-Smith from the Community Theatre (click here for our previous writeup):
You’ll laugh, you’ll cry and you’ll start saying “y’all” after seeing Robert Harling’s STEEL MAGNOLIAS.
The play opens Thursday at 8:00 p.m. on the Whittier stage and features a special opening night dessert party with the cast after the show.
Directed by Jane Maxwell Campbell, Steel Magnolias takes a funny yet poignant look into the lives of six women in a small Southern town. It has been commended for its realistic portrayal of the life-long bonds in small town communities and for its portrayal of diabetes in women.
Six island actresses take on the roles of those complex women: Jandira Shelley as Truvy Jones, the owner of the beauty shop where the play takes place; Kaitlyn Johnson as Truvy’s young assistant Annelle Dupy-Desoto; Maureen See as the town’s “Grande Dame” Clairee Belcher; Lorie Narum as the wealthy curmudgeon Ouiser Boudreaux; Natalie King as Shelby Eatenton-Latcher, the prettiest girl in town, who is struggling with diabetes; and Deb Langhans as Shelby’s socially prominent mother M’Lynn Eatenton. You’ll also hear the voice of George Iliff.
Purchase tickets on-line at www.sjctheatre.org or by calling the box office (378-3210), or coming in Tuesday through Friday from 11 am to 4 pm and Saturday from 11 am to 2 pm.
Steel Magnolias also plays Friday, July 24, Thursday-Saturday, July 30-August 1, and Thursday-Saturday, August 6-8.
