IMA-artAs another school year begins, Friday Harbor students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of exciting, hands on arts experiences under the guidance of working artists and art educators. The San Juan Islands Museum of Art (IMA) in partnership with local public schools is assuring that, despite drastic cuts in educational funding, children in grades K-12 will be able to continue to work in and learn about a variety of arts media as an integral part of their basic education.

IMA, whose mission is to connect people with art that inspires, challenges, enlightens, and educates, has been grateful for the support of the San Juan Island Community Foundation in gathering donations for art in our schools. Additional funding has been provided by the Washington State Arts Commission and the FH Elementary and Middle School PTAs.

This year 100% of the Friday Harbor 7th and 8th grade Middle School arts program and 100% of the “Artist in Residence” program at the Elementary School is being funded thanks to IMA, the PTAs, and the Community Foundation’s efforts. Dr. Bo Turnage, President of the IMA Board, notes, “We want to make sure that our children learn from the very beginning how much the arts can enrich their lives.”

Since 2010, IMA has been strongly committed to developing and expanding this program which provides weekly art instruction in the San Juan Island Elementary and Middle Schools. Students develop interests and learn basic skills that may inspire a lifetime’s appreciation and participation in the visual arts. These skills are also fundamental for those students who continue into the high school arts program, recognized as one of the best in Washington State.

Artists from the vibrant local arts scene bring an extra dimension to the school art program, offering instruction and inspiration. Students are able to see artists at work, to develop their own projects with help from artists and educators, and to have their work displayed in special exhibits in the community. They also participate in field trips to local arts venues.

IMA is a registered 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization and depends on donations, fundraising, and dedicated volunteers. For more information, check out the IMA website at www.sjima.org or call 360-370-5050.
