There’s a new group on the island, raising money and giving to those in need in our community. However, they’re not exactly a new group – they started out years ago as Team Herb’s and have raised a lot of money, mostly for the annual Relay For Life fundraiser that helps with cancer research. What’s new is, they’ve changed things up a bit, and now have a focus on giving the monies raised to groups right here in our community.

Just recently they gave their first donation to a local 4H Bits & Spurs Horse Club. Imagine the club’s surprise when they saw a $500.00 check as payment for 3 cookies at a bakesale!

A big event they have coming up is the “Rock the Mic” Karaoke Contest – with auditions each Wednesday evening in May and a final competition on June 13th. Lots of fun, and lots of money will be raised for great local causes – prizes will include: HDTVs, Kindle Fires and iPods so if you like to sing, you should check it out. More info will be posted here on that in the next week or so.

But in the meantime, here’s more of what the group is all about in President Mike Scott’s words:

Team Herbs is known for being the highest earning fundraising team for Relay for Life for years. This is our 5th year at it. We do the Rock the Mic (formerly Relay Idol), and Rock the Cause which is a local band concert, (we raised $7k last year at rock the cause).

We do work as the servers for the celebrity golf tournament salmon dinner, we work a booth at the Annual Port of Friday Harbor Fly In. And several other fundraisers that over the course of 4 years have raised over $45k.

In our 5th year we are moving from relay and teaming up with the public charity Community Treasures. In doing this we will be able to keep all our funds local, and support not only our own local cancer ward and cancer patients, but also local 4H, Family Umbrella Group, Family Resource Center, DVSAS, the Animal Shelter, and many others. We have some highly motivated members, and plan to do a scholarship, and also create a couple NEW things that we want to support.

We operate at 100% which means every penny raised will go back to the community that needs it. I am the president, and Stacey Smith is VP. We have a passion for volunteer work.

Aside from Team Herbs Local, I also volunteer every Thanksgiving at the Grange for the whole day, and the Pioneer Festival as an S.A.L. member. During the summer I cook burgers on Friday nights at the American Legion, and I am very active with the Legion as a whole as well. I painted all all the Seahawk Logos on the businesses around town before Super bowl, most of them I did for free, or when asked, a couple people gave me $25. I’ve been Team Captain of Team Herbs for 4 years, on the Relay for Life committee for 3 years, and was Relay For Life Chair last year.

If I’m not sleeping or working, I’m probably volunteering – I believe people volunteering their time is worth its weight in gold.

Without Community Treasures we wouldn’t be able to do this local thing. I also want to make it clear that we all love relay and believe in it, we just wanted to do things more locally 🙂

  1. How wonderful it is to see such sustained motivation to help others, and how exciting that the money is now going to stay in our community to help islanders directly. Thank you for your efforts, Team Herbs!
