National Theatre Live’s thrilling broadcast of Frankenstein returns to Friday Harbor for a Halloween screening at San Juan Community Theatre on October 31 at 7:00 p.m.

The production was a sell-out hit at the National Theatre in 2011, and the broadcast has since become an international sensation, experienced by almost half a million people in theaters around the world.

Directed by Academy Award®-winner Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, Slumdog Millionaire), Frankenstein features Benedict Cumberbatch (12 Years A Slave, Star Trek: Into Darkness) and Jonny Lee Miller (Trainspotting, Mansfield Park) who alternated roles as Victor Frankenstein and his creation. In SJCT’s 2013 screening Miller played the creature; this time, Cumberbatch takes on the role and Miller is Frankenstein.

Childlike in his innocence but grotesque in form, Frankenstein’s bewildered Creature is cast out into a hostile universe by his horror-struck maker. Meeting with cruelty wherever he goes, the friendless Creature, increasingly desperate and vengeful, determines to track down his creator and strike a terrifying deal.

Urgent concerns of scientific responsibility, parental neglect, cognitive development and the nature of good and evil are embedded within this thrilling and deeply disturbing classic gothic tale.

Tickets for the screening are $20 for adults, $18 for SJCT members and $10 for student reserved. The SJCT box office (378-3210) is open Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tickets are also available on-line at www.sjctheatre.org.

In addition to National Theatre Live presentations, San Juan Community Theatre also presents operas via The Met: Live in HD and starting in December, will present ballets from Bolshoi Ballet Only in Cinemas. The HD programs were made possible through a generous bequest from the late Dodie Gann and underwriting from The McGee Foundation. A complete schedule of the HD-live events is available at www.sjctheatre.org.
