Ruth Offen of Waterworks Gallery shares these thoughts with you about the artist and art show which opens this weekend…

Last year, walking into a friend’s business, on her counter I spied a catalog of the painter named Anelecia Hannah. On its cover was a portrait of a young woman staring back at me in all her contemporary glory, not a Photoshopped woman, but a bespeckled young gal. I thought, what beautiful painting. Now that is a painter I want to represent.

Now this year, as my gallery celebrates its 30th Anniversary and the gallery opens a major show of works by Anelecia Hannah Brooks, who will be celebrating her 30th birthday. Timing is everything.

Brooks’ work is contemporary realism painted with depth and emotive qualities that remind us of our place in the world. Anelecia, grown and raised in the Pacific Northwest, paints meditative and reflective paintings about our relationship with objects.

Her quiet paintings of everyday objects reflect the passage of time… the used piece of soap, the crumpled up ticket and the stuffed animals. All these images strike a chord within us. Her paintings allow reminiscing about these special moments, in which time is fluid and moving.

The show of work by Anelecia Hannah Brooks opens on Saturday, May 9th and runs until May 25th.

The gallery will host an opening reception May 9, 4:30 – 7:30 pm.

The gallery is located at 315 Argyle Street, Friday Harbor, San Juan Island, WA.

A catalog of the works in the show is available from the gallery.

The artist presents an Artist’s Talk at 1pm on Saturday, May 23, 2015
