Hosted by Skagit Valley College and the SVC Foundation, the event provided an opportunity for community members to gather and learn about SVC’s strong partnership with WSU and the Port of Friday Harbor and how the ongoing relationship serves the educational needs of the residents of the San Juans. After a welcome from Randy Martin, Director of the San Juan Center, the program included remarks by Dr. Laura Cailloux, Vice President of SVC’s Whidbey Island Campus and Centers, Dr. Tom Keegan, President of SVC, Greg Hertel, Friday Harbor Port Commissioner and a SJC science instructor, and Kristina Bayas, Interim Director of WSU San Juan County Extension.

“Skagit Valley College is committed to the San Juan Center and our core themes of access, achievement, and community,” said Dr. Keegan. “Our partnership with WSU and the Port of Friday Harbor illustrates how organizations work together to benefit an entire community.”

SVC’s San Juan Center program began in the early 1970’s and the degree program began in 1986. Initially, the Center was housed in various locations, notably the high school portables and a rental location on Spring Street, but it moved to its permanent home on property leased from the Port of Friday Harbor in 1996. An extension in the lower part of the building, housing the WSU Extension and a community room, was added in 1999. The San Juan Center consists of a four-acre site with a facility that has three classrooms, a commons area, a computer lab, and staff offices. The Center offers academic transfer courses, community education, online education, and the popular Road Scholar program.
