Kathryn Clary for the Hospital District Levy Lid Lift
I have been campaigning for the Public Hospital District #1 (PHD) Levy Lid Lift. This is the first campaign that I have gotten involved in since college, because this means so much to me and our community. The over-arching goal of this levy is to start the process of enhancing services to better allow our elders to age in place.
This levy, when passed will:
- Allow the PHD to purchase the Village at the Harbor, the only assisted living facility on the island.
- Increase wages and provide benefits for the staff in an effort to maximize retention of staff;
- Allow for several Medicaid beds immediately with goal of expansion over the next few years
- Establish a Home Care Agency that will provide in-home services to keep people in their homes
Admittedly, this is a bold idea! However, considerable thought and planning have gone into this proposal. There is a detailed 6 year budget that can be accessed at https://sjcphd.org/ltc (scroll to the bottom under “Documents”)
By making the Village and Home Care Agency a public entity the goal won’t be to make money, but to deliver affordable care. Also, this model of care is NOT the same as the nationally failing Skilled Nursing Facility model of care.
I believe that it is time to think outside the box and challenge the norms. We pay for free education, VA benefits, dialysis benefits, Medicare and Medicaid – why not pay for our elders to age in their communities surrounded by the people who love them.
Please vote YES for the Public Hospital Levy Lid Lift. If you have ANY questions please reach out to any of the commissioners or myself.
First and foremost, I hope that you will vote!
In gratitude,
Kathryn
