Lauren Levinson for Dwight Colley

Editor:

A recent letter purportedly from EMS and Fire District personnel is seriously misleading, if not purposely deceptive.  The first sentence reads, “We, members of your San Juan Island EMS and San Juan Fire District #3, wholeheartedly support Bob Jarman for Fire Commissioner.” In fact, no EMS personnel put their names on that letter. Two firefighter-EMTs who are paid employees of the Fire District and also volunteer EMTs at EMS signed the letter. But no one who is solely an employee or volunteer at EMS signed it. It is a Fire District letter.

If you talk to EMS personnel privately you will learn that there is little enthusiasm for becoming part of Fire. But they’re reluctant to say anything publicly.

The letter also takes a backhanded swipe at Dwight Colley’s campaign by expressing a need to keep “language devoid of honor, truth, and integrity” out of local politics. No such language has come from Dwight’s campaign. But the letter from the fire personnel, in misrepresenting its true origin, is lacking in truth and integrity.

The reality is the fire chief desperately wants to keep Colley off the fire commission because he knows Dwight will ask uncomfortable questions. Dwight will do that because he has the quaint idea that the public has a right to know how and where their tax dollars are being spent.

Don’t be fooled. Cast a vote for transparency and accountability in the Fire District. Vote for Dwight Colley.

Thank you,
Lauren Levinson
