Comments from Small Town Survey 3

Below are people’s comments from Small Town Survey III, about the ferry dock locations:

Considering how early we must get our car in line for the ferry, especially in summer, it would be a bummer to be so far from shops and restaurants to help pass the time. I’d think local business owners would feel the same way.

Doubt this idea will past muster with the Friends.

I really appreciate being able to park my car for the ferry, then go run errands or have a bite to eat. If we had to drive to Jackson’s Beach, that would pretty much make us all captive audiences. A BIG vote to stay in town.

Interesting idea to relieve car congestion in town, but I think it would be too complex and confusing, especially for tourists.

Depends on what it would cost – taxpayer, WSDOT, or ??

What? So the ferry docks and undocks TWICE? All we hear from the state is that they don’t have enough money as it is. Whoever thought this up either doesn’t pay taxes or has Grandaddy’s trust lawyer take care of his affairs. STUPID!

WOULD LIKE TO SEE LAFARGE LANDING MINIMALLY IMPROVED FOR EMERGENCY USE IN ADDITION TO CURRENT DOCK…WOULD NOT WANT JACKSON BEACH AREA TO BECOME OVERRUN AND UGLY…

The roads in that part of town are completely inadequate for this kind of traffic, and vehicle drivers could easily get lost. As a former resident of that area, I can assure you this is a nutso idea.
1/17/2014 11:43 AM

Bad idea.Winter weather would not allow dependable service. Longer route, more traffic through residential areas. Too far from town.
1/17/2014 8:42 AM

Weather would be an issue. In the past winds would do extensive damage to the Lafarge Barge landing facility.
1/17/2014 8:20 AM

Who is going to pay to build this? Who is going to pay to upgrade the roads? Who is going to pay for the lawsuits that will ensue by the area residents as a result of the destruction of their privacy?

That location could certainly be used for something, maybe just an extra landing for cars in the summer. The Spring St location is suited for cars if they would only implement the redesign plan bought forth several years ago…redirect the traffic and lanes.
1/17/2014 7:27 AM

It would ease vehicle traffic congestion in town.
1/16/2014 11:47 PM

I could adapt if the Lafarge venue had sufficient parking and if the neighbors weren’t too pissed off about the noise and traffic. But…does that imply two stops for each ferry? Seems very inefficient!
1/16/2014 9:50 PM

Streets not set up to handle that kind of traffic
1/16/2014 9:40 PM

Businesses depend on visitors arriving in town. I don’t expect the ferry system to provide separate boats either.
1/16/2014 8:53 PM

Oh yuucchh!!!! Don’t want cars out there. Jackson’s beach belongs to the dogs of San Juan Island (and the sail boarders etc.) !!!
1/16/2014 7:55 PM

A very, very bad idea, a longer ride for cars and to what benefit. Also, current roads are not sufficiently capable for this added commercial traffic. Jack Woolsey

Too far from town if you have to park several hours ahead of departure time, as in the summer time.
1/16/2014 5:38 PM

Hate it. Live on pear point rd. traffic would be a nightmare. Who’s idea is this?
1/16/2014 4:00 PM

This would be feasible only if there were amenities close by. The folks who SHOULD be asked are the neighbors living there. They would be trapped by traffic at times.
1/16/2014 2:58 PM

Not going to fly with merchants who depend upon a captive audience. Regarding ferry traffic: if managed by traffic directors as in summer (irregularly) it’s not so bad, and we need to quit complaining. But get those people working the corners during unloading time!

I think if we had a good bus and bus schedule, and frequent and larger passenger only vessels coming into town we could alleviate a lot of summer parking issues; perhaps close a couple of downtown streets and make them pedistrian only and sitting area/parks
