Peter Ross is coming to the island to discuss what we all know – that toxins in the water are hurting the local killer whales, and badly. Here’s more about his presentation this Friday at 7:
Fireproof Killer Whales – Toxins in our Water Lecture Series
On June 12, Dr. Peter Ross of Fisheries and Oceans Canada will discuss, “Fireproof Killer Whales: What does the future hold for Orcas in the transboundary waters of BC and Washington?”
This is the 6th lecture in the Toxins in our Water Lecture series sponsored by Friends of the San Juans. The presentation begins at 7 p.m. at the UW Friday Harbor Labs Commons. Dr. Peter S. Ross is a Research Scientist (Marine mammal toxicologist) with the Institute of Ocean Sciences (Fisheries and Oceans Canada) in Sidney, British Columbia, Canada. He has an active research program on the effects of persistent environmental contaminants on the health of marine mammals, and; the sources, movement and fate of persistent environmental contaminants in marine food chains. He conducts his research in collaboration with colleagues at universities and government laboratories in Canada and internationally.
The Toxics In Our Water lectures series culminates in a presentation by Emmy Award-winning PBS producer Hedrick Smith who will share highlights from his FRONTLINE documentary, Poisoned Waters on July 19 at the San Juan Theatre at 7 p.m.
