In our ongoing series about folks who help out at Lime Kiln State Park, today we present Shirley – she answered the questions we gave her so you could find out a bit more about her:
Name: Shirley Zyph
Number of years visitin &/or living in the San Juan archipelago: 2
Occupation in your real, or unreal, life: Retired. Before that, DOL vehicle licensing.
Furthest place in world from LKPSP that you have visited: Europe
Major passions, besides the whales: Family, history of the islands, soaking up the beauty of this place, being on a nice warm beach in Hawaii
What inspired you to volunteer at Lime Kiln Point State Park? The privilege of seeing and meeting new people at a wonderful location
What is it that you most enjoy about volunteering here? The people and working in the Interpretive Center
Any memorable park experience that sticks out since volunteering? My first time speaking to the Chelan students (100+ 5th graders!)
If you were limited to only one sentence, how would you describe these islands to a visitor right off the ferry? A magical place with friendly people, clean water, pastoral farms and enchanting forests that bring a sense of place and serenity.
What is something that you have learned since volunteering at the park? To really appreciate our State Parks!
Is there anything else you would like to share? It is such a pleasure to volunteer here. The staff is first class. Thank you!
