Presentation: Northwest Native culture in art & song…

In Creation the Raven Sings at Grange Hall on July 12 at 2:00 p.m.

On Sunday, July 12 from 2-3 p.m., acclaimed Northwest Coast Native artists Rande Cook and Francis Dick will bring their culture alive by connecting the elements of art and song in a presentation entitled,  “In Creation the Raven Sings.”

The lecture will be held at the San Juan Grange Hall and is free and open to the public, a dessert potluck will follow. The event is co- sponsored by the Arctic Raven Gallery, Skagit Valley College and the San Juan Island Library. For more information call Arctic Raven Gallery 360-378-3433.

Rande and Fran, both Kwaguilth Native artists from Vancouver Island envision a casual afternoon discussion with the public in which they “connect all the fundamentals of our culture today,” Cook states.  “We will also talk about art and the history of where we come from. We’ll discuss what it is like to be an artist in today’s world, especially coming from a strong and ancient cultural background.”

Painter, print-maker and much sought-after lecturer, Francis Dick, relates “Before anything else my work is about honoring my life process, my journey…to places that I might stand in my truth: my work is not a career, it is a way of life.” Since childhood Fran has been compelled to share her path through singing and art.
“It will be a fun afternoon where we’ll sing some songs, talk about the movement of the art and culture and how it connects to the rest of the world’s art…the affects of being an urbanized Indian, the affects of being Indian in an urban world and where we fit it.

Mostly we want to open it up for questions and for people to come and meet us and talk about the artwork; where we plan on taking the art form,” sculptor, painter and hereditary chief, Rande Cook says.
Library cards are free to island residents with proof of residency.  Library hours are Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
