Grange delivers dictionaries to local third-graders…

Last week kids on the island got a surprise when folks showed up at school to give them a free dictionary…here’s more from the Grange’s Frank Penwell:
On Friday, January 22, 2010 when passing out dictionaries to the 3rd grade students at Friday Harbor Elementary School, Paideia School, and Stillpoint School, Pomona Grange Master Richard Civille told the students about the Grange and then Pomona Grange members Kay Kohler, Pat Ball and Frank Penwell assisted in presenting the dictionaries to the students.

These dictionaries contain much more information than a typical dictionary.
Kids at Paideia get theirs...
Each is a handy reference guide with lots of details. For example, you can look up historical information about our Presidents and the Constitution. You can look up details about countries all over the world, details about our solar system, or look at some handy maps. The Grange
proudly sponsors this learning resource.
Many Granges all over the United States, in cooperation with the Dictionary Project NH, yearly provide 3rd Graders with dictionaries. The San Juan Grange, in coordination with the Washington State Grange, support this project and have sponsored providing dictionaries to San Juan Island 3rd graders. One of the Grange’s goals is to promote education. As Derek Bok said, “If you think education is expensive – try ignorance.”
For fun, our Grange offered a prize of a book gift certificate, and a 100 Grand (the candy bar) for the first 3rd grade student who found the word, and page number of this definition: “The estimation of a thing as worthless.” The winner will be announced next week.
