Looks like the Brickworks is a step closer to reality – here’s more from the Ag Guild:

The San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild Receives $375,000 in State Funding (this is from May 7th)

Governor Gregoire has signed the capital budget bill which includes $375,000 for the purchase of the historic building at 150 Nichols Street where the San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild will develop “Friday Harbor Brickworks,” a permanent year-round home for the San Juan Farmers’ Market, as well as a community and event center, and downtown greenspace.

Ag Guild Co-Chair Elaine Kendall expressed her gratitude for the State funding, “We are thrilled to be one of 45 state-wide Local Community Projects to receive funding in the Capital Budget through the Department of Commerce,  and we are grateful for the support from Senator Kevin Ranker and Representatives Jeff Morris and Dave Quall!  With the State funding, along with the Land Bank’s purchase of the historic preservation and conservation easements, the Ag Guild will be able to raise the remaining funds needed to develop the historic Friday Harbor Brick & Tile building into a community center, greenspace, and multi-use agricultural facility that our community will be proud to have in the center of our town and county seat.”

Friday Harbor Brickworks will transform an underutilized property between Spring and Nichols Streets and turn it into a community center, restoring and preserving the historic building, and creating a greenspace in Friday Harbor’s historic downtown area. Brickworks will be available for community and tourism-related events, arts and crafts shows and markets, and, of course, a great place to buy terrific local produce from county farmers.
