The Island Guardian’s Jack Cory (on behalf of the American Legion) says there’s an event planned for Saturday:
9-11 Memorial Planned In Friday Harbor
On September 11th there will be a memorial ceremony at 09:11 hours. to honor the memory of the civilians and members of the uniformed services who were killed by the September 11th attacks.
The uniformed services will be representing by local fire fighters, police, emergency medical services, Home Land Security personnel; and the American Legion Honor Guard will represent the military.
The ceremony will be held on San Juan Island at the foot of Spring Street at Memorial Park. There will be a speaker’s spot in the park, and emergency vehicles in the east half of the circle.
It is expected the Town of Friday Harbor’s antique fire engine will be located in the center of the arc of emergency vehicles, with the audience assemble on the sidewalk to the east of the park, looking westward toward the speakers with the antique fire engine between them. That will allow for the use of the fire engine’s bell for a “Last Alarm” ceremony to honor the fallen.
The Town of Friday Harbor will lower the Town flag to half mast, and read a proclamation recognizing the 9-11 anniversary. The public is encouraged to attend this annual event to honor the victims and heroes of the 9-11 attacks.
