Kindergarten Readiness Program starts this fall....

Cole Hull says the program at St. David’s is expanding – here’s the scoop:

Saint David’s Day School announces the opening of their new Kindergarten Readiness Program designed specifically for Pre-K 4 and 5 year-old children.  The program dovetails into their existing Kindergarten Enrichment program that itself is structured to work in tandem with the public schools’ kindergarten curriculum.

Founded in 2009, Saint David’s Day School’s purpose is to offering a loving environment where enriched-learning opportunities are offered.  “Saint David’s Day School seeks to instill a lifelong passion for learning, a continuum of curiosity,” says Margaret Barker, Lead Teacher.

The brand new Kindergarten Readiness Program will offer social and academic exploration in a nurturing, structured environment.  Readiness skills for reading and math will be introduced through age-appropriate activities.  The goal is to prepare children to be emotionally, socially, behaviorally, and academically successful in the upcoming Kindergarten.  Classes will run Monday through Thursday from 8:15 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., generally matching the San Juan School District calendar.

Saint David’s Day School’s existing Kindergarten Enrichment Program already boasts an independent K-only program committed to the success and well-being of each child, nurturing them through small class sizes (with a maximum class size of 12 students) and exceptional teachers.  At this “regular” school, academic subjects are explored in a variety of thematic units throughout the year, including math development, language arts, science, social studies, music, art and physical education, along with the always popular cooking plus field trips to places like the library, the airport, and the local swimming pool.

The typical school day starts at 11:15 a.m. and ends at 3:00 p.m.

Open registration for both the Kindergarten Readiness Program and the Kindergarten Enrichment Program has begun for the 2011-12 School Year (beginning Sept., 2011).  Registration forms must be submitted by the end of June, and spaces are filling up fast.

Parents and families are invited to visit the classroom (appointments preferred) to see the facility and learn about these exciting education options for their “new students.”  The school is located on the corner of Park and Marguerite Street, beneath Saint David’s Episcopal Church (780 Park Street) in Friday Harbor.  Also please stop by the Day School booth at the upcoming Children’s Festival at the County Fairgrounds May 7th.

  1. We registered late in the year for the Kindergarten Enrichment Program. We had concerns that a full day might be too much school. Also, the cost seemed high.

After trying it out for a day, we realized what a great value it truly was! Our kindergartener has thrived both socially and accademically since January. Her self-esteem and confidence have increased ten-fold. She has discovered the intrinsic joy of learning and looks forward to her ‘kindergarten program’ each and every day. As for the monthly cost, when broken down hour-by- hour, it is in line with the cost of other programs on the island. Hats off to the teachers Margaret and Carmen for developing and implementing such an effective enrichment experience for our children.
