Kudos for “Trying”

There are just two weekends left for Island Stage Left’s production of “Trying,” and people are loving it. Here’s Louis O’Prussack’s take on the show:
Going to the theatre in New York usually requires a large commitment of time and money, with no guarantee of a great performance. Yet, the potential for seeing a play that makes you alternatively laugh and cry, think, ponder, and fall in love with the theatre again as if it was the first time keeps theatre goers returning. The risks are great, but at least some of the time, the potential rewards are greater.
Theatre in small towns has its own risks. While requiring less of a commitment on the theatre goers part, the limited resources of rural areas make the probability for seeing a world class performance that much more unlikely. Have no doubt about it though, Stage Left’s Trying is such an improbable world class production. What an incredible performance! Bravo!
Is there any greater pleasure than walking over to a theatre, slipping into your seat with few expectations, and as the lights dim being immediately taken away to another time and place? What could be better than a play where one alternatively laughs and cries, is filled with hope and sadness, and then walks out, somehow changed?
Stage Left was gracious enough to offer a special evening performance for Spring Street School Wednesday night, because they believe in the importance of bringing kids to the theatre. Thank you, Stage Left, for your graciousness, generosity, and most importantly, being such masters of your craft.

The kids went with Spring Street School to Island Stage Left’s performance of “Trying,” and said it was incredibly good and to go see it. Just got back from today’s performance. For me, I think it is the best play I have attended in my entire life. Thank you to all who make it happen.
