What’s new….

The new readerboard at FHHS is on the corner of Blair & Guard...it's great! And the senior exhibitions were pretty awesome, as well (you can tell I took the picture earlier this week!)

Looking around the island, there are a few things going on…

T:FLO is the band as The Rumor Mill offers live karaoke tonight – drop in & you’ll sound like a rock star! Starts at 7:30pm, with OPALCO turning the lights off at 11:45 for the whole island. Probably stop by then….

Meanwhile, Dave Calhoun is playing from 2-4pm at Roche Harbor on Saturday & Sunday – always a good one to catch!

• Did you know that Dan Ward’s San Juan Transit has been running for 18 years? Wahoo!

Mark Madsen reports that there was a healthy contingent of islanders two nights ago in Seattle to hear author & essayist & wise elder of the tribe Wendell Berry.

Dick Wade runs Windjammer Janatorial Services (not to be confused with Coy's Winderjammer Barbershop or Randy's Windjammer Cable), and he did a super job with cleaning the carpets in my house as I got it ready to rent out last week - he came with high recommendations, and when he was done, I could see why! Thanks, Dick!

He said his favorite line by Mr. Berry, when asked an audience question about advice to young farmers (given in a slow Kentucky drawl): “Well, giving advice to the young is a cheap form of entertainment.”

John Boyd checks in: “Hey, Ian!…..can you mention on your website that we’ll be selling tickets to win a 3G iPad 64GB on Friday from 2-6 at Market Place? Only 165 tickets left. $5/ticket. All proceeds going to Friday Harbor Relay For Life. Thanks!”

• From our friends at the Washington State Ferries: “Customers are advised to plan for heavy traffic and long wait times during the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. On Friday. May 27, WSF will provide an extra sailing from Anacortes to Orcas at 2:05 p.m. On Monday, May 30, WSF will provide an extra sailing from Orcas to Anacortes at 3:15 p.m.

“Meanwhile, the Anacortes/Sidney B.C. route will be on its regular schedule on the Memorial Day holiday, Monday, May 30.  Customers are strongly encouraged to make reservations in advance for holiday weekend travel on this route by visiting the WSF website or calling 5-1-1.”

Welcome, Kyra!

• Kyle & Melanie just welcomed a new islander – here’s more:
Kyle and Melanie Wilson are pleased to announce the birth of their daughter, Kyra Magdalene Wilson.

Kyra was born at Island Hospital May 5, 2011.
She weighed 6 lbs 5 oz and was 19 inches long.

Kyra is welcomed by her grandparents Gene and Kelle Wilson of Friday Harbor, Dave and Kathy Johnson of Erie, Colorado and her aunts Kati Wilson of Tuscon, Arizona, Michele Johnson of Denver, Colorado and many other family and friends.
Michele Morton at Islanders Bank tells me there’s a cool deal that’s offered by OPALCO & Islanders Bank where they’re connected to help you make home energy improvements a reality – click here to go to the Islanders Bank site and find out more (it’s a good deal!)

J.B. Herron and his company Friday Harbor Gun Runners and Northwest Safety First are offering a couple of classes this coming week (click for more info): Concealed Carry 101 (May 28-30) and Close Quarters Defensive Tactics (May 31).
