Orcas in the news….

The transient orcas were out in Speiden Channel yesterday...here's one, in a a photo courtesy of Jim Maya

If you’re keeping up with our orca friends, here are things you’ll want to know:

• The transients were out in Speiden Channel yesterday. Jim Maya caught some amazing photos of them capturing & eating a Steller sea lion, since they eat mammals, unlike the resident orcas (you can see them on his Facebook page – search: James Mead Maya).

• There’s this cool NPR report about Tucker, the poop-sniffing dog who is invaluable as a researcher ’round here…here’s more.

• If you liked that, you’ll love this article about Tucker by Lisa Lorden.

• Finally, I am so proud to share with you Spring Street International School junior Melisa Pinnow’s incredible video about Lolita, the orca from our waters who was captured by the folks for Sea World in ’76, and who is way overdue to be freed. She makes the case here (she did an amazing job, don’t you think?):
