I hope you get a chance to get around this late summer weekend around the island….let’s take a look around:
• You know, with soccer season coming up this week, the soccer association could use some help with referees…got time? Here’s the word from association prez Travis Ayers:
We are in real need of soccer referees. Refs can volunteer, be paid, or earn Dollars for Scholars hours. The signup spreadsheet is here – thanks!

• Speaking of helping – here’s something I’ve done with my business the last few years, and I think when you get involved, you’ll be glad you did – here’s more from Jenny:
The new school year has begun! The first semester FHHS Community Service Class will begin August 29th. This class utilizes committed adult mentors who will guide students through completion of a service project related to community improvement.
This is a great opportunity for a “win-win” partnership between students and local organizations.
If you have a community improvement service project in mind, a fifteen minute in-class presentations time can be arranged on August 31st , September 4th or September 5th, from 1:00 – 1:55. Please contact Jenny Wilson at jwilson (at) sjisd.wednet.edu for more information.

• The new hospital is on track to open this late fall – here’s more from Amy Cloud at PeaceHealth:
PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center, San Juan Island’s new critical access hospital, is on track to open Nov. 26, 2012. A governing body has been appointed and a ribbon-cutting event scheduled for the new medical center.
On Saturday, Nov. 17, Peace Island Medical Center at 1117 Spring St. in Friday Harbor will be open for self-guided tours between10 a.m. and 4 p.m., with a ribbon-cutting ceremony scheduled for 11 a.m. in the main lobby.
Among those participating in the ceremony will be Lenore Bayuk, chair of the San Juan County Hospital District board, and San Juan Island Hospital Committee co-chairs Tom Cable, Michael Edwards, D.D.S, M.D. and Charles Anderson.
Anderson will serve as chair of the recently appointed governing body for Peace Island Medical Center. The board includes seven community representatives, some of whom have been with the project from its inception, and two from PeaceHealth: Jim Barnhart, chief administrative officer, and Kathleen Pruitt, CSJP. The community representatives are: Charles Anderson, chair; Tom Cable, vice chair; Peg Gerlock; Julie Gralow, M.D.; Rebecca Pohlad; George Von Gehr; and Michael Wingren, M.D.
“Board members bring a wide range of expertise,” Anderson said. “That expertise will help ensure clinical quality and safety, an excellent patient experience, strong financial sustainability and compassionate care for all.”
PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center – the result of a collaboration between the San Juan County Hospital District No. 1 and PeaceHealth – is a ten-bed critical access hospital, which will also house a new, expanded primary care and specialty clinic, cancer center, expanded diagnostic and treatment services, an operating suite for outpatient procedures and a 24-hour emergency department. Its design is the result of a collaborative process involving the Island community, PeaceHealth and the facility’s architectural firm, Mahlum.
“The new medical center is going to be stunning – inside and outside,” Barnhart said. “The island-led design team has worked tirelessly to create a facility that will include state of the art technology within a healing environment that fits beautifully within its natural surroundings.
“The November 17 open house will be a wonderful opportunity for community members to come get an up-close and personal look at the technology, services and structure of their new medical center,” said Barnhart.
Construction on Peace Island Medical Center will continue into October; wood trim, floor covering and interior paint are being applied now, while final site grading, sidewalk and landscaping work are under way outside. The project remains on budget and on schedule. When the building’s construction is completed, all the medical equipment and computer systems will be installed, furniture delivered and supplies stocked.
InterIsland Medical Center staff, including all physicians, will transition to Peace Island Medical Center when it opens. At that time, the total number of physicians (including part time visiting specialists) serving the Hospital District will nearly double.
PeaceHealth Peace Island Medical Center, a critical access hospital on San Juan Island, will operate as part of the PeaceHealth St. Joseph Medical Center network of care, which includes a not-for-profit full-service hospital founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph of Peace, and is part of the PeaceHealth system with medical centers in Alaska, Washington and Oregon. In addition to the hospital and PeaceHealth Medical Group, PeaceHealth’s services in Northwest Washington include several Centers of Excellence, North Cascade Cardiology, a diagnostic laboratory, a joint venture outpatient imaging service and a specialty clinic in Sedro-Woolley.
