Carter Travel Fund

Nicole Elben sends this message:

I would like to let our community know that there is a travel fund set up at Wells Fargo Bank to help Sam Carter’s sister Aylcia and her family travel from Anchorage Alaska to Seattle to attend his Celebration of Life in Friday Harbor. Their financial situation won’t allow them to purchase airline tickets. As this community always does when one of us is in need, let us come together and help the Johnson Family. Go to any Wells Fargo branch and ask to donate to the Alycia and Lionel Johnson travel fund. You can also contact me at 378-6139 or 317-7054. Thank you.

New Board Members Named to Home Trust

Mary, Chary, Martha and Erin

Four islanders familiar to many have been named to the Board of Directors of the San Juan Island Community Home Trust, just as the organization received a $15,000 matching grant from an anonymous donor.

Martha Alvarado, manager of Key Bank; Mary Michael, long time employee at Market Place; Chary Caren, former elementary school teacher, and Erin Graham, early childhood educator and firefighter, were all appointed to the board at the recent Home Trust annual meeting. Michael and Graham are residents of the new Sun Rise neighborhood.

The Home Trust has built twenty-nine permanently affordable homes in Friday Harbor and plans to begin design plans soon for another phase in the Sun Rise development, on Grover St. E.

“These islanders are bringing new energy to our board.” said executive director Nancy De Vaux, “Just as we have finished our strategic planning for the next five years and just as we’ve had a generous donation from another islander.”

The new Board members will join seven continuing members: Barbara Starr, Peter Kilpatrick, Dina Melic, Glen Bruels, Sam Buck. Jim Lawrence and Lee Sturdivant.

The Land Trust model of permanent affordability is now being implemented even in large cities like Chicago; and becoming international, in London Australia, and Belgium.

Anyone wanting more information about the Home Trust, or its next phase of development, should call 378-5541
