Clayton Banry to Receive “Sixth Wolverine Award”
Between the Friday Harbor High School’s girls and boys basketball games against Bear Creek High School on Saturday, Clayton Banry will receive the first ever “Sixth Wolverine Award”.
“This will be a very uplifting afternoon when the entire community can honor one of the many volunteers who keep Friday Harbor High School athletics programs running,” said Mike Martin, the public address announcer. In 2012 San Juan Pasta Company began honoring those who’ve volunteered their personal time ensuring various vital tasks get done for the athletics programs.
For basketball season the program is continuing and expanding. West Marine has donated a brass ship’s bell that will be used similarly to the flag that the Seattle Seahawks use for their 12th-Man Flag raising ceremony.
“Clayton is such a special person who’s poured his heart of gold into our community,” Martin said. “Not only does he bleed Wolverine Purple and Gold, but he embodies everything that makes this island so special.”
Banry has volunteered at the Island Convalescent Center, the San Juan Community Theater, the Animal Shelter, and is currently volunteering at San Juan Island EMS. He also served as the team manager for the high school football and wrestling teams for over 5 years.
In recognizing his many volunteer efforts in the community, prior to the boy’s varsity game this Saturday, Banry will ring the Bell to welcome the team onto the court.
“This is such a great honor,” said Deanna Banry, Clayton’s mom. “He’s in love with this community and volunteering is just his way of showing it.’
Note: The first 200 people in the door will receive a poster featuring a male and female basketball player and a full game schedule.
Between the first and second quarters of the girl’s and boy’s varsity games the Student/Athlete of the Week will be recognized.
