A landmark marriage equality play highlights the next edition of San Juan Community Theatre’s free Readers Theatre series: On Book!
Director Julie Laidlaw and a cast of 21 island actors, with license from the American Foundation for Equal Rights and Broadway Impact, present the play “8” on the Whittier Stage on Monday and Tuesday, March 11 and 12 at 7:30 p.m.
Written by Academy Award-Winning screenwriter (Milk and J Edgar) Dustin Lance Black, “8” chronicles the historic federal trial that challenged California’s Proposition 8, which stripped gay and lesbian couples of the right to marry. Black’s script draws on trial transcripts and first-hand observations of the courtroom drama as well as interviews with the plaintiffs and their families.
Doors open at 7:00 p.m. with festival seating. A “talk back” with representatives from the island’s legal, social and professional fields about the play’s issues will engage the audience and cast after each performance.
