Front Street Construction

Have you seen all the construction going on down there on Front Street by the ferry landing and wondered what’s going on? I talked to Mike Bertrand at the Town and he filled me in. The official title of the project is the “Friday Harbor Terminal Pedestrian & Safety Improvement”.
Washington State Ferries is improving the safety and flow of pedestrian traffic, especially coming off of the ferry, by adding bumpouts, crosswalks, a 12 foot wide staircase up to the sidewalk, an information kiosk and a better wheelchair ramp. This will help keep pedestrian traffic separated from vehicle traffic by making the crosswalks, sidewalks, stairs, ramp and kiosk more inviting.
Front Street will be just as wide as before (except where the crosswalk and bumpouts are), and there will be the same amount of parking as before. The project is scheduled to be completed by March 27 (however if we have much more rain like Tuesday morning, it could be delayed by a few days).
