Janine Lendi
June 26, 1953 – April 5, 2013

A beloved local massage therapist and world-wide scuba diver and underwater photographer died Friday, April 5 in her home in Friday Harbor.

Janine Lendi was born in California, and loved the ocean and warm, sunny days. Her great passion was scuba diving, and she traveled extensively to view the world underwater and photograph her adventures along the way. She was most at home in the water, and adored all the creatures of the sea. Her e-mail address was mermaidjanine.

Janine’s deep compassion for others led to a lifetime of caring for people, first as a licensed respiratory therapist, and then as a massage therapist. She had a big, generous heart, ready sense of humor, sparkling turquoise eyes, a radiant smile and a vibrant personality, and was always ready for a new adventure.

In 1998, Janine moved from California to Friday Harbor. She loved living on the island and zipped around on one of her many scooters, which she much preferred to her Toyota 4-runner. She always wore dazzling turquoise, magenta, and purple colors, and her garden was a palette of blue, purple, and chartreuse.

Janine said one of the happiest days of her life was when she met Paul Isserlis, a native of Scotland who has lived and worked in Canada since the 1970s. They married in April 2010 and divided their time between San Juan and Salt Spring islands.

In the last few years, medical issues hampered Janine’s mobility—but not her spirit. She will be greatly missed by her husband, her sweet cat Tarna, and her many friends from San Juan and Salt Spring islands, California, and various places around the world.

A celebration of Janine’s life is being planned. Information to come.

  1. The world is a sadder place. Her love of life and passion for the outdoors was infectious. We were lucky to have her pass through our lives. She will be missed.

  2. I’ve spent the time since I heard about Janine’s passing thinking of how we met in 1996, became instant friends and shared so many good times and heart to heart conversations.

I will miss her friendship immeasurably.

  3. Janine and I shared a “call house” in Anacortes for a couple of years when she worked at Island Hospital. We worked opposite shifts but kept in touch through work, our fridge and kitchen. She always had a wonderful giggle and smile… even though it had been a long night! Getting away from the rat race, it was wonderful to see her happy in her personal and new professional life. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. Her bright shining star of life shall continue in our memories.

  4. Janine and I met since we lived in the same complex in Friday Harbor for the year I was there in 2011. The world and the Island have truly lost a wonderful individual. I was shocked at her passing.
Janine had a surprising sense of humor that added laughter to our many conversations and visits. I so enjoyed her friendship. She was very intelligent, intuitive, caring, complex and never complained about the physical discomfort and pain she was in daily. She just kept going.
She loved her friends, her dear cat and most of all, her husband. May she rest in peace.

  5. Thank you all for commenting about my sister Janine Lendi. Janine loved all her friends and the San Juan Islands area. She was a very good person who left us a little early. She had a wonderful sense of humor which she received from our father Wallace and a little from our mother Andree. She loved scuba diving and had many more passions. She will be surely missed by everyone. Good luck to all her friends who made her life so enjoyable.
